Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, Muhammad Baron, stated that PT Pertamina (Persero) will follow up on the directives and regulations set by the government concerning Indonesia’s plans to purchase oil from Russia.

“At present, the negotiations are still at the government level. As a state-owned enterprise managing the national energy sector, Pertamina will act in accordance with the directives and regulations established,” Baron said on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.

In principle, Baron assured that Pertamina is open to various cooperation opportunities to ensure the resilience and sustainability of the national energy supply.

In responding to these cooperation opportunities, Pertamina, according to him, will continue to prioritise principles of prudence, compliance, as well as commercial and operational aspects.

Regarding the compatibility of crude oil specifications from Russia for processing in Pertamina’s refineries, Baron stated that the company will study it further.

“We will study the type of crude (crude oil) in question. With refinery modernisation, it is hoped that Pertamina’s refineries will have the flexibility to process several types of crude in the future,” he said.

Previously, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed concrete energy cooperation oriented towards national interests.

The cooperation includes, among others, the development of oil refineries, strengthening oil trade, and increasing the utilisation of energy technology.

“In the long term, Indonesia is also opening opportunities for collaboration in the clean energy sector. As an effort directed towards supporting energy diversification,” he said.

The ongoing volatility in the global energy market, which is still under pressure, is also impacting the stability of energy supplies in many countries, including Indonesia. To maintain national energy supply resilience, the government continues to seek strategic measures, one of which is through negotiations for cooperation with Russia as one of the world’s energy-producing countries.
