Australia is beginning to experience a fuel crisis due to the conflict underway in the Middle East. Reports indicate that nearly 500 petrol stations have already run out of certain types of fuel. On Wednesday (25/3), the local Energy Ministry reported 225 petrol stations out of fuel in Australia. However, the number has now reached 470 stations. According to ABC News reports, at least one type of fuel is completely depleted. This situation has prompted the Australian government to act swiftly through an emergency national cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is scheduled to hold a second emergency meeting with state and territory leaders next week. This meeting aims to strengthen national coordination amid the energy crisis pressure triggered by the Middle East conflict. “Coordination is important so that we have national consistency,” Albanese said in parliament, quoted on Thursday (26/3). The crisis is occurring alongside a surge in global oil prices after Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for world oil distribution. The impact includes rising energy costs that are beginning to disrupt various industrial sectors and could drive up the prices of goods. According to records from the relevant ministry, fuel shortages are occurring in various regions such as Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales. It is reported that Victoria is one of the areas ‘most paralysed’ during the skyrocketing of world oil prices. Local authorities emphasise that this condition is also driven by a surge in demand, not solely a lack of supply. The public is advised not to engage in panic buying. In some areas of Australia, there are several petrol stations that claim to have sufficient stock. This is why the opposition is calling for those stocks to be transferred to other points that are starting to run out of fuel. “The stock is there, that’s what they keep telling us. So the answer should be simple. Move the fuel stock to petrol stations that have run out,” opposition leader Angus Taylor told Channel Nine.
