The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) has confirmed that there will be no further legal proceedings against former South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin following his death. Legal regulations stipulate that law enforcement must dismiss a case if the defendant passes away.

“If he has passed away, the criminal case against him is automatically closed,” said the Head of the Legal Information Centre at the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Surpiatna, in a written statement on Wednesday (February 25).

Alex was implicated in a corruption case related to the Cinde Market in Palembang. The former Governor of South Sumatra was also scheduled to be a witness in the trial.

Anang emphasized that only Alex’s case file will be dismissed. Other parties involved will continue to be prosecuted.

“The others will continue to be processed in court,” said Anang.

Anang stated that the dismissal only applies to physical punishment. State losses can still be recovered as a debt from Alex’s family.

“If there are losses that he has enjoyed, it will be handed over to the Asset Recovery Division (JPN) to file a civil lawsuit,” said Anang. (Can/P-3)
