Attack Near Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Raises Fears of Major Radiation Incident in Iran
Moscow (ANTARA) - The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has voiced concerns regarding military attacks near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Iran, which could potentially trigger a major radiation incident.
In his statement on Thursday (26/3), the IAEA noted that military attacks were reported to have struck around the facility, with the latest occurring on Tuesday night.
Grossi warned that damage to the facility could result in a radiation leak impacting a wide area in Iran and its surroundings.
He called on the conflicting parties to exercise “maximum restraint” to prevent such risks.
Meanwhile, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) reported a new attack on the Bushehr NPP. However, there was no damage or casualties among the staff, and the plant remains operational normally.
On 17 March, a drone attack was also reported without causing casualties or damage.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, which caused damage and killed civilians.
Iran subsequently retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The US and Israel initially described the strikes as “preemptive” measures necessary to counter threats from Iran’s nuclear programme. However, they later affirmed their desire to see a change in power in the country.
