JAKARTA — National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo disclosed the rationale behind President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to join the Board of Peace (BOP) amidst volatile global conflict dynamics, particularly in the Middle East.

Sigit made these remarks whilst attending a joint iftar gathering for the TNI-Polri (Armed Forces-Police) family at Bhayangkara Field, National Police Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

According to Sigit, the current global geopolitical situation remains highly dynamic and impacts global conditions, including Indonesia’s domestic economy and security.

“Recently this has developed into America and Israel fighting against Iran,” he continued.

Sigit stated that the government continues to work towards resolving the situation and ending the conflict.

He explained that President Prabowo recently convened national elites and figures to discuss Indonesia’s position on the global situation.

During that meeting, Prabowo emphasised that Indonesia must continue implementing an independent and non-aligned foreign policy to maintain world peace.

Sigit elaborated that in pursuing this objective, President Prabowo chose to join the Board of Peace.

According to him, this decision initially prompted questions from various quarters.

However, the decision was made to ensure Indonesia retains space to advocate for peace at the international level.

Sigit believes this step is important given that international institutions such as the United Nations and major powers appear to no longer be heard in efforts to maintain global peace.

“So there remains an opportunity to discuss peace in the Middle East and this is what he is doing,” he added.
