As the US Attacks Iran, Foreign Minister: BoP Talks Suspended
Foreign Minister Sugiono said talks within the Board of Peace, also known as the Dewan Perdamaian, have been put on hold as the conflict in West Asia escalates. Sugiono’s statement responds to the Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) demand for Indonesia to withdraw from the Security Council. The MUI has urged the government to withdraw from that international body established by the United States after the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran.
“Now all BoP talks are on hold, yes. All attention has shifted to the situation in Iran,” Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 3 March 2026.
Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace, launched by US President Donald Trump, has previously sparked controversy, especially after the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran. The MUI urged the government to withdraw from that international body after the US-Israel strike on Iran occurred abruptly on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
The demand is recorded in the MUI’s tausiyah in letter Kep-28/DP-MUI/III/2026. The tausiyah was signed by MUI Chairman Anwar Iskandar and Secretary-General Amirsyah Tambunan.
Meanwhile, Sugiono stressed that Indonesia would continue to coordinate with Gulf states. The Gerindra Party politician said several Gulf states, which are also BoP members, had also been affected by the sequence of attacks in the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
“Regarding the BoP issue, we will keep in contact with our Gulf colleagues, because they have also been attacked and they are BoP members,” Sugiono said.
According to Sugiono, President Prabowo Subianto has also spoken by telephone with Gulf leaders. “Everyone has phoned, the one still waiting for a call perhaps is MBS (Mohammed bin Salman), the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Nevertheless, Sugiono did not go into detail about the contents of Prabowo’s discussions with Gulf leaders, as their talks are between heads of state.
