Arifien, 42, was born in Surabaya. An autodidactic painter, he developed his talent from fine arts book, friends and his own experiences. This is a treat for Indonesian fine art buffs as he rarely exhibits, but his contribution to the growth of domestic fine arts is recognized.

Paintings, sculpture and installation works of Yustoni Volunteer, Hafiz and S. Teddy D.

Yustoni Volunteer, born in 1970, is a Javanese who tries to rebel against traditions. He graduated from the high school in 1988 and had studied at the Academy of Accounting for two years before he enrolled in the painting department of the ISI, Fine Art Institute, Yogyakarta, in 1991. Along with other students, he often demonstrates against the campus administration and the government; this is often the theme of his creations. He works with S. Teddy D. in a working studio in Yogyakarta and set up an art network with Hafiz in Jakarta.

Hafiz was born in Pakanbaru in 1971. His father was also an artist. One of his paintings won an award at a contest in commemoration of World Housing Day. He went to the Jakarta Art Institute in 1990. In 1993 the institute honored him best graphic art. He is a freelance magazine artist and graphic designer.

S. Teddy D. was born in Padang in 1970. He enrolled in STSI, the Indonesian High School for the Arts in Surakarta, majoring in fine arts. He concentrated on the making of wayang beber. In 1992 he enrolled in ISI Yogyakarta.

The competition is held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

Almost 100 participants from all parts of the archipelago will compete for the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta Awards and other prizes. Noted art education institutes will send representatives.

The Wayang Orang Barata group will present wayang orang, a traditional Javanese play, directed by Sangadi.

Twenty-four performing groups will take part in the event, which is organized by Teater Koma. Four of them are from overseas -- India, France, Germany and Singapore -- the rest come from Jakarta, Irian Jaya, Toraja, Jambi, Tegal, Banyuwangi, Ponorogo, Ciamis, Malang and Yogyakarta.

Part stage and part transport, the glamorized packaging of The Stage Bus comes complete with a grand piano, drum set and a sound system with 16 canal mixers.

Violinist Luluk Purwanto studied music in the Sydney Conservatorium and Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta. In recent years, she has played alongside her Indonesian-born Dutch husband Rene van Helsdingen for a jazz group. Australian bassist of JakJazz-fame Belinda Moody and Dutch drummer Victor de Boo complete the eclectic team.

Loh Siew-Tuan is considered one of the best sopranos in Southeast Asia. She was born in Fujian, China, raised in Penang, Malaysia, and now lives in London. She learned to sing and play the piano at the Trinity College of Music in London. She has traveled to various countries in Europe, North and South America and Asia. She has also played in opera like Dido, Euricice and Donna Elvira, but she is more famous as a singer.

Dr. Kuei Pin Yeo is director and founder of the Jakarta Music foundation. She is the first Indonesian pianist who received a doctorate degree as a pianist. She has performed in the United States and many Asian countries and won several international awards. The New York Times praised her technique and dynamic performance in Carnegie Hall.

Loh Siew-Tuan and Kuei Pin Yeo will present the works of Schubert, Brahms, Turina, Ginastera and the arrangement of Benjamin Britten's British traditional songs.

Art Exhibition: The Face of Bali at Museum Puri Lukisan, Ubud, Bali.

The works of more than 60 of Bali's foremost artists have been selected for exhibit at the Museum Puri Lukisan, the oldest private museum in Bali. The works will be auctioned for charity on Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Yayasan Citra Baru Foundation in Denpasar.

Swiss artist Marc Jurt presents 150 paintings, sculptures and objects inspired by his travels through Bali for 16 years.

Art Exhibition: Graphic Art Now '97 at Erasmus Huis.

In protest at the increasing number of reproductions, two Amsterdam galleries, Galerie Clement and Galerie Petit, pushed 14 years ago for greater attention to graphic works, which they considered to be more creative. Every two years, the show is held, with the best artists receiving an award.

Participants in this show are Thomas Ankum, Arjan van Arendonk, Sjoerd Bakker, Willy Belinfante, Corneille, Jan Cremer, Lon Buttstedt, Heide Daamen and award winners Sandra Kruisbrink and Gijs van Noort.

Frank owes his boss money, his girlfriend Jeane has just left him and he has quit his job. Mona, a teenager he has known for many years, pays off his debt and suggests they kill his aunt to get her money. The plan succeeds, but Frank then strangles Jeane and gives the money to his boss, who knows what he has done, to buy his silence. He eventually returns to Mona.
