Art Conveys Peace and Unity in Waisak Celebrations
Waisak 2570 BE/2026 celebrations at Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya in Batam were held solemnly through an Art Evening themed ‘Universal Love’ on Sunday (31/5) evening.
The event, held at Jalan Bukit Beruntung in Sungai Panas, Batam Kota, provided a platform for Buddhists and the community to celebrate Waisak through meaningful artistic performances.
The programme began with an opening ceremony and performances of the national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and the local song ‘Batamku’. The atmosphere grew lively as participants showcased various acts, including songs, dramas, and dances conveying messages of peace, brotherhood, and harmony.
Each performance reflected the noble values of Waisak – love, tolerance, and compassion – with artistic presentations that effectively communicated these virtues to all segments of society.
The Art Evening was attended by community leaders and local officials. Batam City’s Culture and Tourism Head, Ardiwinata, represented the city government. Also present were Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Batam’s leader, Pandita Wirya Chandra, Kepulauan Riau Provincial DPRD member Asmin Patros, and PSMTI Central Board Chair Eddy Hussy.
Ardiwinata praised the Waisak Art Evening, noting it was not merely a religious celebration but also a means to strengthen tolerance and togetherness in Batam’s diverse society.
“Events like this effectively convey messages of peace, love, and brotherhood. This aligns with Batam’s spirit of embracing harmony and diversity,” he said.
A representative from Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Batam emphasised that Waisak is not only a spiritual moment for Buddhists but also a tool to strengthen brotherhood and harmonious coexistence amid diversity.
The event highlighted the role of art as a bridge uniting diverse groups through universal messages of peace and humanity.
Beyond commemorating Waisak, the Art Evening also served to strengthen interfaith relations and reinforce tolerance in Batam, a city known for its diversity.
