Army chief's mansion robbed

SURABAYA: A group of unidentified men burgled the two-story mansion of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raden Hartono, located in the posh Sinar Galaxy housing complex Sunday, police said yesterday.

Police said the robbers, maybe four people, tied up the maid before making off with two television sets, a laser disc player, a cellular telephone, five luxury wristwatches and dozens of items of clothing.

The mansion was used by Hartono's relatives as a boutique. Eyewitnesses said the housemaid was the only one at home when the robbery took place at about 11.30 a.m.

The robbers broke into the house after breaking a rolling door.

Bystanders were unaware of the robbery because they thought the strangers were regular customers, the said police, who put estimated loss at "considerably more than Rp 10 million". (15/pan)
