As Eid al-Adha approaches, Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship, including observing the Tarwiyah and Arafah voluntary fasts. Both hold significant merit, particularly for those not performing Hajj.

Tarwiyah fast occurs on 8 Dhu al-Hijjah, and Arafah on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah, the day before Eid al-Adha. These fasts serve as acts of devotion and seeking forgiveness.

The Indonesian government, through sidang isbat, has confirmed that 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH falls on Monday, 18 May 2026. Thus, Eid al-Adha on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah will be observed on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. Consequently, Tarwiyah fast on 8 Dhu al-Hijjah is on Monday, 25 May 2026, and Arafah fast on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.

Intention for Tarwiyah fast (Arabic: نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ تَرْوِيَةَ سُنَّةً لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى; Latin: Nawaitu shauma tarwiyata sunnatan lillâhi ta’âlâ): “I intend to fast Tarwiyah as a sunnah for Allah the Exalted.”

Intention for Arafah fast (Arabic: نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ سُنَّةً لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى; Latin: Nawaitu shauma arafata sunnatan lillâhi ta’âlâ): “I intend to fast Arafah as a sunnah for Allah the Exalted.”

For those who forget to intend at night, the intention can be made before noon, provided no act that invalidates the fast has occurred. The intention for Tarwiyah in the day: “I intend to fast today for Tarwiyah sunnah for Allah the Exalted.” Similarly for Arafah.

The fasts carry significant merit: “Fasting on Tarwiyah expiates sins for a year; Arafah expiates sins for two years.” (HR Abu Syekh Al-Ishfahani and Ibnu an-Najjar). A specific hadith states: “Arafah fast expiates sins of the previous and coming year.” (HR Muslim).
