Approaching Eid al-Fitr 2026, Prices of Chicken, Beef and Chillies Rising in Bandung
BANDUNG — Essential food prices in traditional markets across Bandung, including chicken, beef and chillies, remain elevated approaching Eid al-Fitr 2026. Vendors estimate that price increases will continue in the days immediately preceding the holiday.
One chicken vendor, Erwin (48 years old), at Kosambi Traditional Market stated that butchered chicken currently costs 42,000 rupiah per kilogramme. He anticipates prices will continue rising as the holiday approaches.
“Currently the price is 42,000 rupiah per kilogramme, and by three to one day before Eid it could rise to 45,000 rupiah per kilogramme,” he said during an interview at Kosambi Market in Bandung on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
Before the month of Ramadhan, he noted that chicken prices stood at 38,000 rupiah per kilogramme. Despite the increases, he reported that demand for chicken has remained relatively steady. However, sales volume has declined due to reduced consumer purchasing power.
“Sales have dropped because of weak purchasing power. Average daily sales have fallen by 20 per cent from about 100 birds,” he said.
Erwin added that chicken prices previously reached 48,000 rupiah per kilogramme several years ago, driven by an empty supply of chicken stock.
A beef vendor, Rohman, stated that beef prices currently range from 150,000 to 160,000 rupiah per kilogramme for cleaned meat, whilst uncleaned beef is priced at 140,000 rupiah per kilogramme.
“Now it is 150,000 to 160,000 rupiah when cleaned. If uncleaned, it is 140,000 rupiah,” he said.
A vegetable vendor, Eli, reported that long chillies (cabai tanjung) have risen from 40,000 rupiah per kilogramme to 60,000, and now stand at 80,000 rupiah per kilogramme. Red bird’s eye chillies (cabai rawit) have declined from 120,000 rupiah per kilogramme to 100,000 rupiah per kilogramme.
“Prices are still high,” she said. She noted that red bird’s eye chillies cost 60,000 rupiah per kilogramme before Ramadhan.
