Apple's AirTag Factory Investment in Batam Remains on Track
Jakarta — Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Nurul Ichwan, has confirmed that the investment in an AirTag factory by US technology giant Apple in Batam remains on course. Apple is said to have already acquired land and is serious about constructing the facility.
Regarding when the factory will be built, Nurul was unable to provide a definitive timeline. However, based on the most recent meeting with Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM Rosan Roeslani, Apple stated it had already purchased land for the factory.
"In the last meeting with the minister, they conveyed that land acquisition had been completed and they would build there. The certainty is that if they have already purchased the land, there is no way they would not invest," he said at his office in South Jakarta on Wednesday (23/5/2025).
Regarding US President Donald Trump's policy of imposing 32 per cent reciprocal tariffs on Indonesia, Nurul noted that this could potentially disrupt Apple's investment plans in Indonesia. However, given that Apple is a US-based company, he was confident the Trump administration would take this into consideration. Even though Apple operates outside the US, its contributions would still be felt by the American economy. Moreover, Apple is one of the world's leading technology giants.
"But as we know, Apple dominates the world, and even though it is not located in America, ultimately its GNP will also be enjoyed by America, contributing to the economy," he concluded.
Apple is prepared to invest in Indonesia by building an AirTag factory in Batam worth US$1 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp16 trillion. The factory is planned to commence operations in February 2026. This was announced by Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM Rosan Roeslani at the 2025 New Year Spirit event.
Apple had already purchased land for the factory. "On the investment side, we have successfully convinced them (Apple) to proceed in Batam. The land has been purchased, they have shown it to us, and cut and fill work has begun for the start of construction. It is hoped that by early 2026, in February, the AirTag production facility will be ready," said Rosan at Menara Global, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (15/1/2025).
