Apple and pear seasons

JAKARTA (JP): Australian fruit exporters are here to promote
the 1996 Australian apple and pear seasons which will start in
three weeks.

A preseason launching dinner was held on Thursday at the Grand
Hyatt by the Australian Apple and Pear Growers Association,
Australian Horticultural Corporation and Australian Horticultural
Exporters Association. Some 100 Indonesian fruit importers and
wholesalers were invited to the dinner.

Brian Hall, marketing manager for the Australian Horticultural
Corporation, said his country expected to export at least 4,087
tons of apples and pears.

An Indonesian retailer asking for anonymity told The Jakarta
Post that it sometimes took up to four weeks for fruit imports
from southern Australia to reach Jakarta.

Australian fruit importers, however, see Indonesia as a large
and rapidly growing market.

Tim Reid, president of Tasfresh International Pty. Ltd,
believed that Indonesians have a better understanding of good
nutritional values and have healthier eating habits compared to
Australians who prefer to eat red meat. (14)
