Anwar's wife testifies at trial
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): The wife of jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim testified on Friday that she had seen a confidential government document on a high-level political conspiracy against her husband, the ousted deputy prime minister.
Azizah Ismail, who now leads the political reform campaign her husband started, said Anwar -- accused of corruption and sexual misdeeds -- showed her a police report in 1997 about the existence of a plot to destroy him.
The police report was mentioned in testimony by the former chief of police intelligence in November. But it was never discussed in the trial because the judge ruled that Anwar could not use the alleged political conspiracy as a defense.
Anwar was arrested on Sept. 20 and beaten by Malaysia's ex- police chief Abdul Rahim Noor while blindfolded and handcuffed in a jail cell.
