Jakarta – Former Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman has conveyed his hopes to his successor, Liliek Prisbawono Adi, regarding the direction of constitutional enforcement in Indonesia. Anwar stressed his expectation that the new justice would not merely fill the position but would make a tangible impact on the institution and the country. “I hope he brings wisdom and blessings to the Constitutional Court and, of course, to the nation and state,” said Anwar at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Friday, 10 April 2026. He also emphasised that future challenges are not about new issues but about maintaining consistency in fulfilling the constitutional mandate. According to him, the direction of the Constitutional Court’s work is already very clear as stipulated in the 1945 Constitution. “The authority of the Constitutional Court is clear: to adjudicate and decide cases related to laws, then to adjudicate and decide cases related to powers between state institutions. Thirdly, the dissolution of political parties, and fourth, the resolution of election result disputes. That’s the first,” he explained. Meanwhile, Liliek expressed gratitude and appreciation to his originating institution, particularly the Supreme Court, for the trust given to undertake this great responsibility. He explained that so far, he is only carrying out the function of continuing the leadership relay from the previous justice who has served for over a decade. “Specifically, there are no special tasks given to me. So, I am only in the position of replacing Mr Anwar Usman. Professor Anwar Usman, who has served as a Constitutional Justice for 15 years,” he clarified. Regarding future steps, Liliek affirmed that his main focus is to safeguard the honour of the constitution by prioritising a statesmanlike attitude in every decision-making process at the Constitutional Court. “Of course, safeguarding the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia is the first priority, and the statesmanlike aspect serves as our guide as Constitutional Justices. That’s all, thank you, that’s enough,” Liliek concluded.
