Anwar Usman to Retire from Constitutional Court: I Tender My Apologies
JAKARTA — Constitutional Court judge Anwar Usman tendered his apologies ahead of his retirement from the institution.
His apology was conveyed whilst delivering the ruling of session No. 176/PUU-XXIII/2025 held in the Constitutional Court’s Plenary Session chamber in Jakarta on Monday, 16 March 2026.
“For this reason, from the deepest recesses of my heart, I tender my apologies,” said Anwar Usman on Monday.
“Before I deliver this ruling, perhaps this is the final session I shall attend, as on 6 April 2024, I will have completed 15 years of service at the Constitutional Court,” said Anwar Usman.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has announced a list of ten candidates for Constitutional Court judges to replace Anwar Usman, who reaches retirement age in 2026.
The announcement was released through the Supreme Court’s official website on Monday evening, 2 February 2026. The announcement notice, numbered 19/WKMA.Y/KP1.1/II/2026, was signed by Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia for Judicial Affairs Suharto, serving as the Selection Committee chair.
It is reported that Anwar Usman will reach retirement age in December 2026. The age limit for constitutional court judges is regulated in Article 23 of Law No. 7 of 2020 on the Constitutional Court.
The article states that constitutional court judges may be retired upon reaching the age of 70 years.
Furthermore, Article 6 paragraph (2) of Constitutional Court Regulation No. 4 of 2012 requires the Constitutional Court to notify the House of Representatives no later than six months before any of its members reach retirement age.
