Anwar files report on alleged cover-up
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim has lodged a police report about an alleged cover-up during the collapse of a national steel company that was later privatized, his wife said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at her home, Azizah Ismail said that Anwar lodged the report on Wednesday at the federal court lock-up where he is currently on trial for sodomy.
Anwar, who was also finance minister before he was sacked by Mahathir last September, has charged in the report that Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was involved in the downfall of Perwaja Steel Bhd.
Under Malaysian law, police must launch an investigation when a report is lodged with them.
He included a copy of an initial report on Perwaja by independent auditors Price Waterhouse dated 28 May 1996, which he said would "facilitate investigation over and above what has been investigated by the anti-corruption agency (ACA)."
