The Thai government, through the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), is considering a major strategy to provide free round-trip domestic flight tickets to foreign tourists. This bold step is taken as an effort to strengthen the tourism sector amid rising global uncertainties due to the conflict in the Middle East, which threatens international flight mobility. Citing Travel and Tour World on 17/3/26, TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool revealed that they plan to revive the “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights” campaign proposal. Under this scheme, foreign tourists who buy international flights to Thailand at normal prices will receive free round-trip domestic tickets to various destinations within the country. The main goal of this programme is to encourage tourists not only to stop in Bangkok but also to explore secondary cities and other tourist destinations. Thus, the duration of stay and tourist spending in Thailand will increase. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have caused airspace closures in some areas and flight route changes, impacting a 10-15% rise in airfare prices due to surging operational and fuel costs. Based on TAT data, if the conflict lasts more than eight weeks, Thailand risks losing around 596,000 international tourists with potential revenue losses reaching 40.9 billion Baht (approximately Rp 18 trillion). In addition to offering free ticket incentives, Thailand is also shifting its marketing focus to more stable regional markets less affected by Middle East airspace disruptions. Countries such as China, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia are the primary targets in this recovery strategy. TAT also plans to use the remaining budget from the “Thailand Summer Blast” scheme to support airlines in increasing flight frequencies to major cities and supporting cities across Thailand. If approved, this programme is expected to become a strong magnet for foreign tourists while reinforcing Thailand’s position as an aviation hub connecting Asia with Australia and Europe amid the global crisis. Through this strategy, Thailand hopes to maintain tourist confidence and ensure that their tourism industry remains a key economic driver for the country despite the shadow of international conflict.
