Anti-Corruption Commission Still Considering Detention of Former Religion Minister Yaqut Despite Suspect Status
Jakarta — The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is still considering detention measures against former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, who has been formally designated as a suspect in the ongoing case.
Asep Guntur Rahayu, Deputy Chief of the KPK’s Enforcement and Execution Division, stated that investigators will first schedule Yaqut for questioning before any further action is taken.
“He will be summoned first, of course, since his current status is suspect. We will then assess the situation. It is not an automatic process; we must consider many factors,” Asep told journalists at the South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
Asep explained that the decision regarding detention forms part of the investigators’ broader strategy in handling the case. Consequently, the KPK is still weighing various aspects before taking such a step.
“Detention is a matter of strategy for us. We are examining how the case will proceed further and other considerations. If the assessment is appropriate, we will certainly consider it,” he said.
He emphasised that the absence of detention thus far is not due to any specific constraints but rather reflects the ongoing investigative process.
Asep added that the KPK is endeavouring to resolve the case as swiftly as possible. He noted that the investigation into this case has actually been ongoing for quite some time.
“As quickly as possible, since the investigation commenced last year, around August if I recall correctly. The process has been ongoing, which is why this has become a priority for us to conclude,” Asep said.
