Angelique, Dea in junior semis
JAKARTA (JP): Angelique Widjaja and Dea Sumantri moved a step closer to an all-Indonesian final in the girls' singles of the Indonesia Gas Negara International Junior tennis championships on Thursday.
Angelique beat compatriot Novianti Warsono 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 and second-seeded Dea overcame Maretha Van Niekerk of South Africa 7- 5, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.
Angelique meets Japanese Kumiko Iijima, who beat Thailand's Wilawan Choptang 6-3, 6-3, on Friday. Dea challenges Constanze Steiner of Austria, who defeated Japanese Masayo Hosokawa 4-6, 6- 4, 6-3.
In the boys' semifinals, Thailand's Sonchai Ratawani will meet Wang Yeu Tzuoo of Chinese Taipei and Lukasz Kubot will face Clinton Jacobs of South Africa on Friday.
Ratawani edged Izak Van der Merwe of South Africa 7-6 (7-5) 4- 6, 7-5, and Wang beat another South African, Jason Pieters, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kubot beat Gunter Austerhuber of Austria 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and Jacobs defeated Marco Mirnegg of Austria 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. (ivy)
