Andrie Yunus Case: Attack Viewed as Resistance to Prabowo's Human Rights Commitment
Jakarta — Indonesia’s House of Representatives Commission III, which oversees law, human rights, and security matters, has publicly condemned the acid attack targeting human rights activist Andrie Yunus.
Commission III Chair Habiburokhman denounced the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Disappeared Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).
According to Habiburokhman, the incident is not an ordinary criminal matter to be investigated and resolved solely by law enforcement authorities. Consequently, the case cannot end with the arrest of the perpetrators alone but must extend to identify the intellectual actors who ordered the attack.
Habiburokhman characterised the acid attack on Andrie Yunus as a form of resistance against President Prabowo Subianto’s government commitment to strengthening human rights protection.
“Commission III of the House of Representatives affirms that the acid attack on Andrie Yunus constitutes a form of resistance or opposition to the Government of President Prabowo’s commitment to maximise protection and advancement [of human rights],” he stated.
According to Habiburokhman, this effort is also connected to supporting the implementation of the House of Representatives’ legislative function as outlined in the Asta Cita government programme.
Habiburokhman stated that Andrie Yunus is entitled to receive state protection following his victimisation in this criminal act. “Commission III of the House of Representatives affirms that Andrie Yunus is entitled to receive his right to obtain protection,” he said.
This protection applies based on both national law and international law that has been recognised by the Republic of Indonesia, whether as a citizen or as a human rights defender.
