"Andilan Kebo" Teaches the Importance of Preserving the Tradition of Mutual Cooperation
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno stated that the “Andilan Kebo” tradition teaches the importance of preserving gotong royong as part of Betawi cultural identity amid the dynamics of a metropolitan city. He made this remark while attending the event held by the Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR) at Taman Kerempugan Korwil FBR in East Jakarta on Thursday. “With the spirit of togetherness through this ‘Andilan Kebo’, I must admit I’m a bit surprised. It turns out that activities like this still exist in Jakarta. It reminds me of my childhood in Kemayoran, when the community shared according to their abilities,” he said. Rano explained that “Andilan Kebo” is a tradition where residents pool resources to buy livestock, which is then distributed to the community. The amount of contribution is not fixed but adjusted to each resident’s ability, reflecting values of justice and togetherness. According to him, this tradition holds historical value and the philosophy of gotong royong, which remains relevant today. “Those who contribute more receive more, those who contribute less receive less. However, the essence is togetherness as neighbours. Everyone participates according to their ability,” he said. Rano stated that the community must understand cultural diversity, especially during major religious holidays that occur close together. “This becomes our commitment to ensure this tradition continues every year,” he said. Deputy Governor Rano also highlighted the social conditions in Jakarta, where some residents still struggle to meet food needs, including meat consumption. Therefore, according to him, occasions like Eid al-Fitr and the “Andilan Kebo” tradition are important for strengthening social solidarity.
