Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesian palm oil is beginning to attract greater attention from global markets, including consumers in the United States. This shift in preference is seen as opening new opportunities for Indonesian vegetable oil products to expand export markets.

Hendratmojo Bagus Hudoro, Director of Plantation Protection at the Directorate General of Plantations, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, stated that there are clear indications of a shift in vegetable oil consumption in the United States, which is beginning to look towards palm oil.

According to him, this trend represents an important opportunity for Indonesia as one of the world’s largest palm oil producers.

“There is a shift in consumer preferences in the United States. Previously, they used more non-palm oils, but now they are beginning to switch to palm oil,” said Bagus during a palm oil discussion at the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday (2 March 2026).

This change in preference is linked to global market demand for vegetable oils that are more efficient and competitive.

“If we compare in terms of productivity and land efficiency, palm oil indeed has considerable advantages compared to other vegetable oils,” he said.

Beyond changing consumption patterns, the government also sees opportunities from trade policies that could open wider market access to the United States.

“Now there is a new opportunity regarding tariff pathways that can reach 0%. This is certainly an opportunity that must be seized,” said Hendratmojo.

This momentum could serve as an entry point for Indonesian palm oil products to strengthen their position in global markets. The US market has significant influence over the direction of global consumption as many other countries follow trends that develop there.

“If America starts to make palm oil one of its main choices, typically other countries that are its partners or allies will also follow suit,” he said.

Beyond the US, demand for Indonesian palm oil also remains strong from major countries such as India and China, which have been the primary export markets. The dependence of several countries on Indonesian palm oil supplies remains quite high.

“India and China are still very dependent on palm oil supplies from Indonesia,” he said.

He believes that global geopolitical conditions and changing trade dynamics could also open new space for expansion of Indonesian palm oil exports.

“In the midst of a global situation full of uncertainty, every opportunity, no matter how small, must be utilised to strengthen the position of our commodities,” he said.

He hopes that opportunities from the US market can be maximised by domestic palm oil industry players.

“If we can seize this opportunity well, it will certainly have a positive impact on Indonesia’s palm oil exports and also on the welfare of farmers within the country,” he said.
