Amazon Lays Off Hundreds of Robotics Division Employees
The American technology company Amazon has cut staff in its robotics division. The decision has also been confirmed by the American marketplace giant. “We regularly review our organisation to ensure our teams are ready to innovate and deliver best-in-class service for customers,” Amazon confirmed the layoff news. However the company founded by Jeff Bezos did not detail the number of employees cut, nor the reasons behind this layoff. According to internal sources, at least 100 employees are affected. They design robots and other automation devices, particularly in warehouses. The layoff also comes after Amazon halted the development of the robotic arm project known as Blue Jay. This robot was showcased at an event in October 2025, appearing to have several arms capable of picking multiple items at once. With that capability, the robot was designed to assist workers in relatively small spaces. In addition to cutting staff in the robotics division, Amazon over the past year also dismissed a small number of employees in the devices and services division, books, podcasts, and public relations, according to KompasTekno from Reuters. Amazon’s business has actually grown significantly, and was projected to overtake Walmart in the Fortune 500 list for 2026. But it is not known what considerations Amazon has for reducing its staff at this time. By the end of February 2026, Amazon was projected to surpass Walmart in the Fortune 500. The list ranks the 500 largest US companies by annual revenue and is compiled by Fortune magazine. The official Fortune 500 list for the 2026 edition will be released in June. However, based on the latest financial reports released by each company, the top position is expected to change. The figure is slightly higher than Walmart’s revenue, which reached USD 713.2 billion (roughly IDR 12,040 trillion) in the fiscal year ending January 2026.
