JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has assured that all national roads and bridges affected by disasters in Sumatra are now 100% functional. As of 7 May 2026, the majority of impacted infrastructure has also been restored or is still undergoing further handling to support the recovery of community activities. Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo stressed that accelerating infrastructure handling is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that economic and social activities can quickly return to normal. “Post-disaster infrastructure handling is our priority so that the community can resume activities safely and comfortably,” said Dody, quoted from a release on Sunday (10/5/2026). In the connectivity sector, besides national roads and bridges that are fully functional, handling of regional roads and bridges is also being carried out gradually in collaboration with local governments. Meanwhile, around 67% of the total 1,181 affected regional bridges have been made functional again. In the water resources sector, handling continues on impacted irrigation areas, weirs, rivers, and estuaries. River handling has recorded progress of about 73% completed or still in process. In addition, all affected reservoirs have been fully handled. In the basic infrastructure sector, the Ministry of PU ensures that basic community services continue to operate. Of the 178 affected drinking water supply systems (SPAM), about 95.5% have been made functional again. The Ministry of PU has also completed emergency handling for all affected Final Processing Sites (TPA) and Sewage Sludge Treatment Installations (IPLT). To support community needs, the construction of boreholes and cleaning of settlement areas continue in various affected regions. The Ministry of PU continues to coordinate with local governments as well as related ministries and agencies to ensure all handling processes run optimally, including in the water resources sector and settlement infrastructure recovery. The Ministry of PU will also continue to monitor developments in the field to ensure all affected infrastructure can be handled comprehensively, sustainably, and resilient to potential future disasters.
