Alert! Tidal Flooding Expected Along Bali's Coastline from 2-9 March
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Regional Office III in Denpasar has cautioned coastal residents to prepare for tidal flooding during the period of 2-9 March 2026. Head of BMKG Regional Office III, Cahyo Nugroho, attributed the warning to the convergence of the lunar perigee phase and a full moon.
“The lunar perigee phase occurring on 25 February and the full moon on 3 March 2026 have the potential to increase maximum sea levels in several coastal areas of Bali,” Cahyo stated in a written notice released on Monday (2 March 2026).
The perigee phase is an astronomical condition when the moon reaches the closest point in its orbital trajectory to Earth. This position intensifies the moon’s gravitational pull and triggers the highest tidal surge.
Cahyo noted that the timing of potential tidal flooding may vary across different coastal regions. However, in general, the phenomenon will impact coastal residents’ activities and port operations.
“Such as cargo handling at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt farming and inland fisheries,” he explained.
BMKG has mapped several coastal areas across multiple districts and municipalities, including the southern coastline of Tabanan, the Badung coast, Denpasar city’s coastline, Gianyar’s coast, and the southern Klungkung coast.
“The public is urged to remain vigilant and prepared to mitigate the impacts of the maximum tidal surge,” Cahyo concluded.
