Alert issued for heavy rain on western slopes of North Sumatra that could trigger landslides
Medan (ANTARA) — The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has reminded residents to be alert to the potential for rainfall in the western slopes and western coastal regions of North Sumatra on Tuesday 10 March, which could cause flooding and landslides.
“Be alert to the potential for medium-intensity rainfall on the western coast and western slopes of North Sumatra that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding and landslides,” said Budi Hutasoit, forecaster at BMKG Region I, in Medan on Monday.
He stated that in general, weather conditions in North Sumatra on Tuesday morning would be mostly cloudy, but with potential light rainfall in Langkat, Nias Islands and Mandailing Natal.
During midday and evening hours, conditions would be cloudy with potential light to medium rainfall in several regions of North Sumatra.
Medium-intensity rainfall could occur in Humbang Hasundutan, Labuhanbatu Utara, Labuhanbatu, Nias Utara, Padanglawas Utara, Tapanuli Selatan, Tapanuli Utara and surrounding areas.
During night-time hours, conditions would be cloudy with potential light rainfall in several areas of North Sumatra, and similarly in the early morning hours, skies would be cloudy with potential light rainfall in a number of North Sumatra regions.
Average air temperature is forecast between 13 and 33 degrees Celsius, humidity at 67-100 per cent, and winds blowing from north to east at speeds of 3-7 km/h.
