Alert: Hydrometeorological Disasters in East Kalimantan 9-11 March 2026; Regions on Alert Status Listed
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Balikpapan Station has issued an early warning regarding potential severe weather conditions that will strike East Kalimantan (Kaltim) over the next three days, from Monday through Wednesday, 9-11 March 2026.
Atmospheric conditions indicate a potential for high-intensity rainfall that risks triggering hydrometeorological disasters. The public has been advised to prepare for possible flooding in residential areas, water accumulation on transport routes, and river overflow. Additionally, landslide threats loom over areas with hilly topography and steep slopes.
Carolina Meylita Sibarani, Head of the BMKG Balikpapan Data and Information Team, has detailed several points falling within the extreme weather red zone this week. Residential areas along riverbanks are identified as the most vulnerable areas affected by water overflow. BMKG has urged residents to immediately implement independent mitigation measures.
Based on weather radar monitoring, the estimated timing of rainfall accompanied by lightning in various regencies and cities on Monday includes several warning zones. On Tuesday (10/3), thunderstorm interference is predicted to persist in Berau Regency (at 14:00 and 20:00 Western Indonesia Time) and East Kutai in the morning and evening hours. BMKG advises the public to avoid outdoor activities during lightning and strong winds for safety reasons.
Currently, Indonesia’s weather conditions are influenced by two cyclone seed systems monitored in northern and southern regions. In the morning, skies are expected to be cloudy, but moving into midday, afternoon and early evening, light to moderate rainfall is likely to strike Central Java evenly.
The Batam area, as an archipelago region with high maritime mobility, makes weather conditions one of the important factors requiring attention. BMKG Maritime Station Tenau Kupang forecasts wave heights in several waters in East Nusa Tenggara can reach up to 2.9 metres during the period 8-14 March 2026.
Remain vigilant against such extreme weather as it can result in hydrometeorological disasters such as landslides, flooding and tornadoes. BMKG forecasts thunderstorms striking East and North Jakarta on Saturday morning (7/3/2026), with potential for strong winds and air temperatures between 23-26 degrees.
