Extreme weather conditions are forecast to affect 25 districts across Central Java on 2 March, with high waves and tidal flooding continuing to impact the region. The public has been advised to remain vigilant regarding the extreme weather conditions as they may trigger hydrometeorological disasters.

Morning weather in Central Java is expected to be overcast, but from midday through early evening, light to moderate rainfall is forecast to occur across the region. Extreme weather conditions—particularly heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning strikes—are anticipated in 25 districts located in mountainous areas, highlands, the northern coast (Pantura) and central Central Java.

In addition to tidal flooding (rob) with a maximum height of 1 metre affecting northern waters and potentially causing flooding in several Pantura districts, waves of 1.25–2.5 metres continue across both southern and northern waters, posing considerable risk to maritime activities including fishing vessels, barges, and cargo and passenger transport.

“Be alert to potential flooding in several districts along Central Java’s northern coast, as tidal flooding continues in northern waters from 18:00–21:00 WIB, which could significantly disrupt residents’ activities,” stated Doni Prastio, a forecaster with the BMKG Maritime Station at Tanjung Emas in Semarang on Monday 2 March.

High waves of 1.25–2.5 metres are occurring in northern waters, Prastio continued, whilst in southern Central Java waters waves may reach 4 metres, posing risk to maritime activities especially when wind speeds exceed 15 knots, or when accompanied by heavy rain and storms, which can create quite treacherous conditions.

Arif N, a forecaster with the BMKG Meteorological Station Ahmad Yani in Semarang, separately stated that weather conditions in Central Java would continue to be affected by light to moderate rainfall across the region on Monday 2 March, with extreme weather intensifying in 25 districts, potentially triggering hydrometeorological disasters including landslides, flooding and whirlwinds.

The districts in Central Java with potential for extreme weather conditions include Cilacap, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Mungkid, Boyolali, Klaten, Karanganyar, Sragen, Ungaran, Temanggung, Kendal, Batang, Kajen, Pemalang, Slawi, Brebes, Magelang, Salatiga, Pekalongan, Tegal, Bumiayu, Majenang and Ambarawa.

“Other areas are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with winds blowing from west to north at speeds of 10–25 kilometres per hour, air temperatures ranging from 18–32 degrees Celsius and humidity levels between 60–95 per cent,” he noted.

The public is advised to heighten vigilance against the potential for severe weather across various regions of Indonesia in the coming week, particularly heavy to very heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
