The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded heavy to extreme rainfall across Indonesian territory and predicts that light to heavy precipitation will persist over the coming week.

"BMKG has recorded rainfall of heavy to extreme intensity in a number of Indonesian regions, including the Greater Jakarta area," said Acting Deputy for Meteorology at BMKG, Andri Ramdhani, speaking to reporters on Saturday (21/2/2026).

Andri explained that rainfall measured over a 24-hour period reached 179mm at Halim Perdanakusuma in East Jakarta, and 168mm at Atang Sanjaya in Bogor Regency. He noted that the duration of rainfall was relatively prolonged, lasting from evening through to morning.

"Meanwhile, in several other regions of Indonesia, rainfall of light to moderate intensity has also been observed. BMKG has additionally recorded heavy rainfall in North Sulawesi (80.8mm/day), West Java (78.9mm/day), and the Riau Islands (55.0mm/day)," he said.

Andri stated that the increased rainfall intensity was influenced by the Asian Monsoon, which has accelerated the growth of convective clouds.

"The increase in rainfall intensity is influenced by the strengthening Asian Monsoon, which brings sufficiently strong westerly winds that accelerate convective cloud growth, particularly in western and southern Indonesia," he explained.

"Furthermore, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, currently observed in the western Indonesian region (Indian Ocean), is also contributing to increased rainfall in Sumatra, western Java, Kalimantan, and northern Sulawesi," he added.

BMKG predicts that over the coming week, these atmospheric dynamics will continue to have an impact. Weather conditions are forecast to be dominated by light to moderate rainfall.

"Over the coming week, BMKG expects these atmospheric phenomena to continue having a significant impact on weather conditions in Indonesia. Generally, weather is forecast to be dominated by light to moderate rainfall," he said.

However, he urged the public to remain vigilant against the potential for increased heavy rainfall in a number of regions, specifically Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Papua, and South Papua.

"Meanwhile, over the coming week, regions with the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall include Banten, DI Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Highland Papua," he elaborated.

BMKG will continue to intensively monitor atmospheric developments. Weather information and early warnings will be issued periodically to support the preparedness of both the public and regional governments in facing the potential for extreme weather.
