Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has addressed the future of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train (Whoosh), stating that the government will complete the financial restructuring of the project first, before extending the route to the Surabaya region in East Java.

However, Agus ensured that the restructuring process would continue and be carried out in parallel. He stated that the restructuring efforts had been discussed several days earlier in a coordination meeting with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, CEO of Danantara Indonesia Rosan Roeslani, and other stakeholders.

The General Chairman of the Democratic Party emphasised that financial restructuring is an important matter that must be completed before developing a more serious roadmap for extending the route to Surabaya.

“We should first ensure the Whoosh is completed, meaning we can find good solutions, and only then develop the next phase,” Agus said at Bina Graha Building in the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Agus stated that the government still has the determination to manage and develop the Whoosh project. In fact, the government is committed to extending the Whoosh route not only to Surabaya but all the way to Banyuwangi, East Java, in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto’s direction.

The Ministry of Transport, through the Directorate General of Railways, Agus said, is also continuing to formulate ways to make the high-speed rail project more effective and beneficial. According to him, a longer route would make the train’s speed more optimal.

For Agus, the development of Whoosh will significantly transform Indonesia’s transport sector. “This is being developed further because it will be a game changer – Jakarta to Surabaya can be reached in approximately 3 hours by train,” he said.

He added, “I believe this will change the development map and also create new economic growth that we can bring along the new route.”
