Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), stated that the government has prepared mitigation efforts to anticipate potential disruptions during the Nyepi and Idul Fitri 2026 celebrations. These mitigations even include preparations for extreme weather impacts and natural disasters at several vulnerable points. He personally inspected the train mudik services to ensure the readiness of transportation facilities and infrastructure in facing the surge in passengers during the 2026 Lebaran mudik period. On that occasion, AHY, along with officials from the Ministry of Transportation and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), flagged off the departure of the Kereta Gaya Baru Malam Selatan from Pasar Senen Station to Gubeng Station in Surabaya. AHY also greeted passengers and directly reviewed the service readiness prepared by PT KAI during the Lebaran transport period. “We hope that multimodal transportation during this Lebaran period can be prepared as best as possible. Various potential risks have also been mitigated, including the readiness of teams at several points with high vulnerability levels so that if disruptions occur, they can be handled immediately,” said AHY in a written statement on Thursday (19/3/2026). This was stated by him during the inspection of train transportation service readiness at Pasar Senen Station, Jakarta, on Tuesday (17/3/2026). Based on PT KAI’s presentation, the number of train trips prepared for this year’s Lebaran transport period increased by about 2.1 percent compared to the previous year. A total of around 49,886 train trips for long-distance and local services. In addition, it is estimated that around 5 million passengers will use train transportation during the Lebaran transport period. Specifically at Pasar Senen Station, the daily passenger number is estimated to reach around 24,000 people, an increase compared to normal days which range between 12,000 and 15,000 passengers. AHY emphasised that the government continues to encourage improvements in transportation access for the public during the mudik period, including through train ticket discount policies. “In line with the President’s directive, the government is striving to improve transportation access for the public during Lebaran mudik, especially for those in need. Through PT KAI, ticket discounts of up to 30 percent are provided, targeting around 1.2 million passengers,” he explained. In addition to the ticket discount programme, the government is also implementing several other support programmes such as free mudik programmes and free motorcycle (motis) programmes that allow the public to transport motorcycles by train to their hometowns. AHY emphasised that improving the quality of transportation services is not only related to the readiness of physical infrastructure but also the quality of service to the public. He added that strengthening train transportation is also an important part of efforts to reduce traffic density on highways during the Lebaran mudik period. “In addition to preparing physical infrastructure, services to the public must also continue to be improved in a humane and enjoyable manner. The mudik journey is not just a physical journey, but a journey of the heart to the hometown,” he concluded.
