AHY Highlights Regions in North Coast Threatened with Disappearance and Submersion, Here Are the Points
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has emphasised that the construction of a giant sea wall must be accelerated due to the increasingly worrying conditions in several areas along Java’s north coast (Pantura). If the giant sea wall is not built soon, the minister, often referred to as AHY, stated that the worst potential scenarios could occur by 2050 in the Pantura Java region. “Projections for sea flooding or sea level rise up to 2050, if we do not intervene, this could be worse than now,” said AHY during his presentation at the coordination meeting of the Java North Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ) on Monday (4/5/2026). In his presentation, the potential sea level rise in Java’s Pantura by 2050 could reach 50-100 cm, or even up to 200 cm. For instance, in the Tangerang, Bekasi, Indramayu, Pemalang, Pekalongan, and Rembang coastlines, the potential sea level rise could reach 50-100 cm. Even in the Demak coastline, the sea level rise could reach 200 cm. Meanwhile, in the Tuban coastline, the sea level rise could reach 150 cm. AHY added that the current sea level rise is 0.8 cm to 1.2 cm per year, as an impact of global warming. “Java’s Pantura is also affected by sea level rise due to global warming, rising from 0.8 cm to 1.2 cm per year. This also continuously threatens tidal flooding that can destroy property, damage residents’ homes, and so on,” he explained. Therefore, his side will push for the giant sea wall construction to be faster, especially in areas that are now increasingly worrying, such as Jakarta Bay and Semarang. “This is the urgency that we hope will drive and move us all to build the giant sea wall more quickly,” he said.
