Ahead of Lunar New Year, Police Deploy Hundreds of Personnel for Security
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) has deployed hundreds of personnel to assist with security ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year (Imlek) celebrations on Tuesday (17/2).
"Polda Metro Jaya has deployed 155 personnel, consisting of one company-level unit (SSK) from the Samapta Directorate numbering 75 personnel and one SSK from the Mobile Brigade Corps (Satbrimob) numbering 80 personnel," said Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, Police Commissioner Budi Hermanto, in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that for this year's Lunar New Year celebrations, Polda Metro Jaya is conducting both overt and covert security operations at a number of places of worship.
"As well as celebration venues, accompanied by increased patrols in vulnerable areas, crowded centres, and routes leading to viharas and Chinese temples," Budi said.
In addition, he said Polda Metro Jaya has also held personnel readiness assemblies and carried out sterilisation of locations prior to worship services.
"We are implementing traffic management and strengthening coordination with administrators of places of worship and relevant agencies," Budi stated.
Previously, the government was scheduled to hold the inaugural Imlek Festival from 17 February to 3 March 2026 at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, under the tagline Harmoni Nusantara (Archipelago Harmony).
Carrying the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) in terms of inclusivity, diversity, and interfaith harmony, the 2026 Imlek Festival encompasses lantern festivals in various cities, a culinary market festival featuring acculturated food products, arts and creative works, an open museum of Chinese cultural acculturation, and a Nusantara Imlek Parade featuring barongsai (lion dance) performances.
The pinnacle of the National Imlek Festival is designed as an open and inclusive celebration for the general public, featuring national silat and wushu athletes.
Beyond Jakarta, the 2026 Imlek Festival is also being celebrated through national activations in various cities across Indonesia, including Singkawang, Palembang, Solo, Semarang, Manado, Makassar, Surabaya, Medan, Bogor, Batam, and Pontianak, showcasing diverse regional expressions of Imlek culture in the spirit of Harmoni Nusantara.
