The Surabaya City Department of Food Security and Agriculture (DKPP) found one sacrificial animal infected with scabies after teams conducted inspections of sacrificial animals at several locations in Surabaya. We immediately isolated it to prevent its sale. That was the sole finding of a sick animal in the Pabean area, said Nanik Sukristina, head of the Surabaya City Department of Food Security and Agriculture.

The finding occurred during a comprehensive check of sacrificial animals across 31 districts, which has been ongoing since Monday 18 May. In addition to scabies, some animals were found to have flu but will be treated immediately.

The team said the inspections would continue until Tuesday 26 May 2026. We have also involved academics from Universitas Airlangga (Unair) and UWK, and today we are accompanied by Pusvetma, as well as the East Java Provincial Veterinary Service and Pelindo, she added.

It is estimated there are more than 100 sacrificial animal stalls in Surabaya, 61 of which have been inspected. All stalls in Surabaya will be inspected, with none allowed to pass without inspection.

The inspections include checking the administrative documents and health certificates of the sacrificial animals from their origin region. Then we also conduct thorough examinations by the veterinarians overseeing the process to assess the animals’ health, she said.

Edy Budi Susila, head of the Bureau of Veterinary Farma at Pusvetma (the Centre for Veterinary Farma under the Ministry of Agriculture) in Surabaya, said upstream actions with vaccination of sacrificial animals were in place. We ensure that livestock moved through the trade chain meets the requirements. It may be the same as during Covid-19. So the livestock brought here have undergone PCR testing, vaccination, and against LSD, PMK and other strategic diseases, to ensure they are healthy, he explained.

Mass vaccination campaigns are routinely held twice a year, February-March and July-August. The government has prepared to provide PMK vaccines nationwide, about 4 million doses, in addition to private sector programmes, he said. For East Java, the required PMK vaccines for livestock amount to 1.5 million out of a national total of 4 million doses.

During the inspections, cases of foot-and-mouth disease (PMK) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) were found in several areas. PERUMDA Dharma Jaya has confirmed its readiness to slaughter thousands of sacrificial cows for Eid al-Adha 1447 H.

Each sacrificial animal entering Surabaya must have received at least one PMK vaccination, and this must be evidenced with a vaccination certificate or a QR eartag. In addition to meeting demand, the health of the sacrificial animals is good and free from diseases such as PMK and anthrax.
