Depok, Kompas.com – Comedian Debi Ceper visited the Depok Metropolitan Police Chief, Commissioner Abdul Waras, to convey residents’ aspirations regarding the organisation of a running race during Ramadan that would be facilitated officially and legally by the government.

The meeting took place on Tuesday (3 March 2026). In the discussion, the Police Chief welcomed the aspiration and emphasised the importance of holding the event in accordance with legal procedures, from preparation to post-event periods.

Debi explained that Ramadan-running races frequently attract negative perceptions due to alleged gambling links and potential disruption to public order.

According to Debi, the Ramadan-running tradition commonly held by youths is often linked with the risk of clashes. In reality, if well managed, such activities can be a positive conduit for the energy and talents of the younger generation.

He said he has received many requests from Depok residents to help facilitate a running race that has official permission from the local government.

“Our Police Chief also stated that running races are allowed, but should not disturb other members of the public,” Debi said.

“That is why he would organise it at the City Hall, with police security and also with a crowd permit,” he added.

The plan is to hold the event at the kecamatan level across the whole jurisdiction of the police sector on Friday (6 March 2026), followed by a final round at Depok City Hall on Saturday night (7 March 2026).

According to Bayu, the running races usually held by youths during the fasting month are simply a way to fill free time and seek entertainment.

He also noted that spectator numbers were quite large. Some of them even participated in running events previously held unofficially.

“We always look for routes that are truly safe and quiet, because we just want to be entertained by watching youths, hence we organise the running race,” Bayu told Kompas.com in an interview on Wednesday (4 March 2026).

Bayu stressed that the main aim of the activity is to bring people together and channel abilities, especially for youths with talent in running.

“Therefore I speak up to request facilitation, because the talent of youths is abundant in the world of running,” he continued.

With official police and local government facilitation planned, it is hoped the Ramadan running events can proceed in an orderly and safe manner, while offering a positive space for youths without disturbing public order.
