Addressing Harassment at UI Law Faculty, dr Tirta: Do Not Normalise Vulgar Jokes
JAKARTA – Doctor Tirta Mandira Hudhi, commonly known as dr Tirta, has urged the public to halt the habit of making sexist or vulgar jokes, including in private conversation groups. This statement comes after the emergence of an alleged verbal sexual harassment case via a group chat involving 16 students from the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Law.
According to him, jokes with a sexual tone should not be normalised, whether in public spaces or private ones such as WhatsApp or Line groups. He believes this habit can carry over into adulthood and potentially shape unhealthy thought patterns and behaviours.
“Regarding the widely discussed group chat case. The lesson to take is, please get used to not making vulgar jokes, because those jokes will become a habit that is carried on continuously into adulthood,” said dr Tirta in his post on X, quoted on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
He also reminded of the importance of self-control, especially regarding sexual urges. “If you’re wanking, control it. Whether it’s a WhatsApp group or Line group. The point is, don’t normalise vulgar jokes,” said dr Tirta.
He also highlighted the long-term impacts of such behaviour. According to him, the habit of speaking in a sexist or vulgar manner can be imitated by the next generation, including children.
“Later your child will imitate it, you’ll be confused,” said dr Tirta.
