ADB gives aid to private schools

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: The Asian Development Bank will
give Rp 15 million (US$ 6,564) each to 43 private junior high
schools in the regency of Banjar and in the Banjarmasin
municipality, Antara reported.

The funds, the first in a five-stage assistance program for
private schools here, will be arranged and handled through the
provincial 1996/1997 budget.

The money will be used to finance a number of projects at the
schools, including setting up scholarships for high-achieving
students from poor families, renovating laboratories, and buying
books.

"We want private schools to survive and thrive," said the head
of the local office of the ministry of education and culture, H.
