Adaptive Travel Packages Become Affordable Holiday Solutions Amid Global Pressures
A more adaptive travel package is touted as a solution to capture opportunities in domestic tourism, particularly as global economic pressures mount. “Adaptive travel packages that adjust to current conditions, which may be shorter, more regional, and with budgets that are more affordable,” said Pauline Suharno, chairperson of the Indonesian Travel Agent Association (Astindo), quoted by Antara, on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.
There are options for overland travel, using sleeper-bus facilities, which are seen as significantly reducing travel costs. The adaptive travel packages also offer high flexibility; for example, meal times can be adjusted. In the past, travel agents typically provided meals for groups. The old package system is now being revised to reduce consumer costs.
“And this aligns with the sustainability principle, whereby we can have a positive impact on local communities when we design or run travel packages,” said Pauline.
She noted that Astindo has already designed shorter-duration travel packages with an overland travel concept. The journeys start in Yogyakarta and end in Banyuwangi or Solo, using trains.
“So overland, by train. This is what we have done, and we hope that in the future, during long weekends, people will not just stay at home but will continue to travel within agglomerations,” she explained.
Moreover, inter-ministerial coordination is cited as the key. “Coordination among ministries/agencies (K/L) is important to prevent tourism losses. Tourism has a large multiplier effect and requires inter-agency coordination, including immigration, finance, and human resources (HR),” she added.
