Acid Attack Case: Komnas HAM Insists No Institution Stands Above the Law!
The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) is pushing for a thorough investigation into the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. Komnas HAM stated that no institution or anyone should be above the law and go unpunished.
This was conveyed by Komnas HAM Commissioner Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi during a press conference on the progress of the investigation into the Andrie Yunus case at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters, Wednesday (18/3/2026). The press conference was attended by Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, Director of Criminal Investigation at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, Head of Polri’s Professional and Security Division Inspector General Abdul Karim, Kompolnas Commissioner Choirul Anam, LPSK Chairman Achmadi, and House of Representatives Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman.
“We want to ensure that acts of violence against human rights defenders are thoroughly investigated,” said Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi.
Pramono stated that expressing opinions in public is a right guaranteed by the Constitution. He said Indonesia is a democratic country.
“In order for every citizen to feel unafraid, that is a right guaranteed by our Constitution, including expressing opinions in public, which is also part of our Constitution, so no one, no institution or anything should be above the law and go unpunished,” said Pramono.
“It is important to send the message that this country is a democratic one that provides space for differing voices,” he added.
Police Confirm Executor’s Face from CCTV Is Not AI
Previously, police revealed the faces of two executors in the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus from CCTV footage. Police assured that the images of the two perpetrators’ faces have not been altered and are not the result of artificial intelligence (AI).
“This is the result of footage captured from CCTV that we have obtained. We emphasise to all colleagues that this has not been altered or processed in any way, so we can be accountable that this is not the result of artificial intelligence,” said Director of Criminal Investigation at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters Commissioner Iman Imanuddin at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters, Jakarta, Wednesday (18/3).
Iman also revealed the two executors with initials BHC and MAK. The facial images of the two executors were purely taken from CCTV recordings along the road that captured the executors’ movements.
“We convey that this is purely taken from CCTV captured by surveillance cameras along the route passed by the perpetrators, so it is not the result of artificial intelligence,” he said.
Furthermore, Iman said his side has examined 15 witnesses in this case. He suspects the acid attackers number more than four people.
“Currently, we suspect that we can inform that the two people we showed earlier from Polri data, one with initial BHC, two with initial MAK. However, from our investigation results, we do not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators could be suspected to be more than four,” he said.
As is known, Andrie Yunus became the victim of an acid attack allegedly carried out by two perpetrators in Central Jakarta, Thursday (12/3) night. The incident occurred while Andrie was on his way home after attending a podcast event at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).
