Floods that struck Aceh Tamiang Regency a few weeks ago have impacted various sectors of community life, including education. Water inundated settlements and public facilities, halting learning activities in several schools.

Data from the Aceh Tamiang Education and Culture Office records that 439 school buildings were damaged by the flood. One of the severely affected schools is State Elementary Madrasah (MIN) 4 Aceh Tamiang in Rantau Subdistrict.

In response to the situation, the Aceh Tamiang Regency Government, Human Initiative, and representatives from the Songs for Sumatra team initiated the kick-off for school renovations on Thursday (9/4/2026). This programme marks the initial step to reorganise learning spaces so that students can resume education safely and comfortably.

The renovation programme is realised through collaboration among various parties. Songs for Sumatra previously initiated fundraising through a concert held in London. Support also comes from the Human Initiative diaspora in several countries such as Europe and Japan, as well as other donors.

Human Initiative President Tomy Hendrajati stated that solidarity from various parties is the main strength in aiding the recovery of education in the flood-affected area.

“Such great solidarity has emerged across all levels, regardless of who they are. Therefore, we extend thousands of thanks to all parties who have given us the opportunity to work together to restore hope and decent learning spaces for children in Aceh Tamiang,” he said.

Meanwhile, Aceh Tamiang Deputy Regent Ismail hopes that this renovation programme can help accelerate the recovery of disaster-affected educational facilities.

“May this programme run smoothly and also serve as support for better, safer, and more beneficial educational recovery for improving education and the future of Aceh Tamiang’s young generation,” he said.

The renovation at MIN 4 Aceh Tamiang covers 13 classrooms, the principal’s office, teachers’ room, library, prayer room, health room, and several other supporting facilities. The repair process is targeted to be completed in about three months.

Previously, the flood submerged the school up to the roof of the building, halting teaching and learning activities. As an initial handling step, several parties carried out cleaning of the school area and provided temporary school facilities so that the learning process could continue in the interim.
