The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing major steps in the revitalisation of the Old Town area by integrating two mass transportation modes, the MRT and Electric Rail (KRL), which pass through the region. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that this project is part of the commitment to accelerate the transformation of the Old Town into a more modern area without sacrificing its historical value.

“This project not only brings the existing MRT but also the electric KRL that passes through the Old Town. We have discussed this with the President Director of KAI, and the President’s directives are clear. Hopefully, it can be completed well this year,” said Pramono, quoted from Antara on Thursday (9/4).

This integration plan includes the operation of a 16 km electric KRL line in the first phase, with plans for development to reach 28 km in subsequent phases. This integration is expected to bring significant changes to the face of the Old Town, which is currently undergoing a major revitalisation process.

With more modern transportation routes, the Old Town area is estimated to experience significant transformation in terms of mobility and ease of access, which will encourage improvements in the quality of life for the surrounding community and attract more tourists.

In addition to transportation integration, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also focusing on the Old Town revitalisation, which has been underway for some time. This project aims to restore Jakarta’s identity as a global city that remains rooted in history and culture.

“This revitalisation is our effort to ensure that the Old Town remains an icon of Jakarta with a modern touch,” said Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, who also leads the Old Town Revitalisation Team.

In the planning, the Old Town will be divided into three zones: core zone, development zone, and support zone. Rano added that the current main focus is on the core zone, which covers around 80 hectares out of the total 363 hectares of the Old Town area.

“This core zone includes the Maritime Museum and Fatahillah Square, which are important landmarks,” he added.

Furthermore, in this revitalisation process, the Jakarta Provincial Government also emphasises the importance of building supporting facilities such as adequate parking areas and organising street vendor locations (PKL). These facilities are expected to create a neater and more comfortable atmosphere for visitors and the surrounding community.

With a combination of modern transportation and historic area revitalisation, Jakarta’s Old Town is certain to offer a new, more attractive and efficient experience, while strengthening its position as a relevant tourist destination in the era of globalisation.
