SOLO, KOMPAS.com - The condition of a car’s brakes is one of the important components that must always be monitored by vehicle owners, especially before undertaking the Mudik Lebaran homecoming. Foreman Aha Motor Aji Dwi Nugroho said the condition of the braking system on a car should be regularly checked at a workshop; however, there are several conditions that can be checked from the reservoir. Aji explained that when the brake fluid level is at the minimum threshold, this does not necessarily indicate a leak. This can occur due to changes in the position of mechanical components in the braking system. He noted that as brake pads wear down, the caliper piston moves further forward toward the working point. This movement increases the space in the hydraulic system, causing the brake fluid level in the reservoir to appear to drop. “Logically, brake fluid should not decrease because it is in a closed circuit; it can decrease if there is a problem,” Aji said. According to Aji, there are several causes that can cause the brake fluid level to reduce. This condition can occur because the brake pads have worn down or due to a leak in the brake fluid system. “If the reduction occurs over a long period, a year or two, it could be caused by worn brake pads,” Aji said. “In addition, it could also be from the seals on each wheel, the pipes, or from the upper master brake cylinder, and this is usually detected during routine brake service,” Aji said. A decrease in brake fluid volume can also be caused by evaporation, which is generally indicated by a change in the fluid colour. Therefore, if the brake fluid level declines and the colour appears darker than usual, this condition could be a sign that the brake fluid quality has deteriorated and needs replacement. However, if the brake fluid quality has deteriorated, Aji recommends promptly replacing or flushing the brake fluid. This step is important to restore the braking system’s performance so that it remains optimal and safe to use.
