A Glimpse of the Magnificence of the 'Serene Crescent' Installation, Transforming Soekarno-Hatta Airport into a Ramadan Oasis
The stiff façade of the airport terminal, usually dominated by concrete and glass, has changed drastically.
As Lebaran 2026 mudik waves approach, PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (InJourney Airports) is undertaking a sweeping aesthetic transformation by introducing themed Ramadan installations at the archipelago’s air gateways.
This move is a strategy to reduce passenger stress amid the peak air traffic of the year.
At Terminal 3, InJourney Airports adopts the Serene Crescent theme, a design fusion that attempts to marry the elegance of local motifs with the sacred aura of the Middle East.
InJourney Airports’ Chief Executive Officer, Mohammad R. Pahlevi, explained that the mudik experience begins as soon as travellers set foot at the entrance.
“At each entrance to Terminal 3, there is a tunnel gate dominated by a calming blue palette paired with a row of artistic lanterns. This tunnel gate seems to usher travellers to prepare for the journey and to feel a seamless journey experience,” Pahlevi said in a statement cited by Kompas.com, Saturday 7 March 2026.
Under this dome, travellers are greeted by living plants and an activation stage draped in batik motifs, creating a tranquil atmosphere amid the bustle of check-in queues.
In contrast to Terminal 3, Terminals 1 and 2 adopt the Desert Harmony theme. The installations here emphasise the warmth of terracotta colours with natural materials such as rattan, teak wood, and Indonesian weaves.
The earth-toned colour palette is deliberately chosen to convey a sense of ‘homecoming’ for travellers.
“The mudik tradition, which will begin next week, is a special moment for Indonesian society. InJourney Airports is bringing the warmth of Ramadan to the airport to accompany the mudik journey,” he added.
Besides Soekarno-Hatta, Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is also serving as a pilot project for these themed installations.
Since 5 March 2026, Ramadan ornaments have begun adorning Bali’s international and domestic terminals, to be followed by the installation of focal points on 9 March.
While those two major airports remain the main focus, similar designs have also been implemented proportionally across all airports under InJourney Airports’ umbrella.
