8 Indonesian Seafarers Detained in Iran Since April as Tehran Embassy Provides Ongoing Support
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Indonesian Embassy in Tehran continues to support eight Indonesian citizens working as crew members on the MSC Francesca, detained by Iranian authorities since 22 April 2026.
Indonesian Ambassador to Iran and Turkmenistan Roy Soemirat stated that the Panama-flagged vessel was detained alongside the Liberia-flagged Epaminondas. The detention is reportedly part of Iran’s response to the United States seizing an Iranian ship on 19 April 2026.
‘Informally, the Tehran embassy obtained initial information from several sources about the possible presence of eight Indonesian citizens working as crew on the MSC Francesca,’ Roy said during a phone interview on Friday, 29 May 2026.
During meetings, the embassy emphasised the importance of consular access for the Indonesian crew members.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the presence of the eight Indonesians aboard the MSC Francesca. The Iranian government has also facilitated basic needs and communication with families for the crew, in coordination with the ship’s company.
‘The Iranian government stated they are conducting a judicial review concerning the vessel and its crew,’ Roy added.
Iranian security authorities continue to allow limited communication for the Indonesians, according to diplomatic exchanges.
‘The Tehran embassy is coordinating with the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta as the focal point for overseas Indonesian citizen protection issues,’ Roy continued.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry is also coordinating with relevant government agencies, including the recruitment agency for the Indonesian crew members in Indonesia.
The embassy is currently further coordinating with Iranian authorities on next steps for the crew members aboard the MSC Francesca.
Roy noted that certain matters outside government control require separate discussions between the crew, the shipowner, and their recruitment agency in Indonesia.
