7,000 buses for holidays

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will deploy 7,085 buses
from Dec. 18 to Jan. 4, 1996 to meet transportation demand during
the Christmas and New Year's holidays, an official says.

The head of the traffic department of the city land
transportation control agency, Herman Tonglo Langi, said
yesterday that none of the buses is new.

As many as 6,405 of the buses are regular inter-city buses,
while the remaining 680 buses are public buses.

He said that the operation of the buses is based on the letter
from the Minister of Transportation No. 207/2/20/DRPD/93 on
transportations for Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year's
holidays.

Herman said that the number of buses to be operated will be
adequate, however his office is also preparing additional buses
in case of emergency.

Herman said more buses could be needed as this year's
Christmas, New Year and school holidays will happen
simultaneously. "We expect more revelers."

He said that all the buses will be pooled at existing bus
terminals such as Pulo Gadung, Rawamangun and Kampung Rambutan in
East Jakarta, Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta and Kalideres in West
Jakarta. (yns)
