68 illegal KWK's seized in a dragnet

West Jakarta police have impounded at 68 unauthorized minibus transports in a two day dragnet this week.

The vehicles, which were caught in the mayoralty police operation last Wednesday and Thursday, are currently being held at the city police's impound yard on Jl. Pemuda, East Jakarta.

The chairman of the authorized suburban transport cooperatives, Koperasi Wahana Kalpika (KWK), H. La Ode Djeni Hasmar, applauded the police for their action, saying that these illegal transports were serving the KWK routes.

"We hope the police will extend their operation to all five mayoralties in the city," he said.

The KWK secretary, Eddy G. Tairas, estimates over 1,000 illegal transports are operating in Jakarta.

As reported by Terbit yesterday, many have called on KWK to increase their fleet to meet the people's rising demands for better transportation services.

KWK itself has applied for permission from the municipal administration to increase its fleet, but so far there has been no response to the application. (mds)
