JAKARTA – A total of 6,673 inmates (warga binaan pemasyarakatan or WBP) in the DKI Jakarta region received Special Remission (Remisi Khusus or RK) for Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah on Saturday (21/3/2026). The handover of the remission decision letters was conducted symbolically after Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Jakarta Narcotics Penitentiary by Heri Azhari, Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kakanwil Ditjenpas) for DKI Jakarta. “Remission is a right for inmates who have met the requirements and serves as an indicator of the success of rehabilitation. This demonstrates that the state is present to provide recognition for behavioural changes towards improvement,” said Heri, quoted from Antara on Saturday. Heri explained that of the total 6,673 inmates receiving the sentence reduction, there were two categories of remission granted. Heri emphasised that the granting of remission is an integral part of the correctional system that focuses on rehabilitation and social reintegration processes. In line with this, Syarpani, Head of the Jakarta Narcotics Penitentiary, stated that the Eid al-Fitr moment serves as a means of reflection for all inmates to continue improving themselves. “Remission is not merely a reduction in sentence, but a form of appreciation for discipline and active participation in rehabilitation programmes,” said Syarpani. The penitentiary authorities hope that this granting of rights can serve as a stimulus for inmates to continue behaving well until the end of their sentence. “We hope this becomes encouragement to lead a better life in the future,” he added. Syarpani is also optimistic that with this remission, inmates will be increasingly motivated to follow rehabilitation programmes optimally to be ready to return to society as more productive individuals. “It is hoped that all inmates are ready to return to the community as better and more productive individuals,” he concluded.
