6.5 Tonnes of Waste in North Jakarta's Rorotan Successfully Reduced through Household Sorting
The independent waste sorting programme being intensively promoted in Rorotan, Cilincing, North Jakarta, since February 2026, is beginning to show results. The reduction in organic waste from the area is reported to reach 6.5 tonnes per day. Rorotan’s lurah, Ahmad Fitroh, stated that the reduction comes from sorting organic waste right from residents’ homes before it is processed at the TPS 3R in RW 07. Ahmad explained that the waste sorting programme was intensified after the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, designated North Jakarta as a pilot area for waste management. He said that every household now receives sorting bins to separate organic and inorganic waste. The organic waste is then disposed of by residents at drop points prepared in each RT before being collected by PPSU officers and the Sub-District Environmental Service to the TPS 3R. “In each RT, there are two drop points. If the RT is large, we prepare up to four drop points. From the drop points, the waste is then transported by PPSU to the TPS 3R in RW 07, which is subsequently turned into pulp,” he explained. At the TPS 3R in RW 07, residents’ organic waste is processed into pulp to be used as animal feed and for maggots. “Once it becomes pulp, it can be used for animal feed, such as for ducks, maggots, chickens, or catfish feed, which happens to be available here in Rorotan,” he revealed. Meanwhile, dry waste that cannot be processed and residue will be redirected to the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan. “We’re focusing on two types for now. The level of education and public understanding isn’t the same for everyone. People’s willingness may not be there if it feels too troublesome,” he said. Kader of the RW 07 Waste Sorting Movement, Nani Darsonowati (46), stated that education on waste sorting actually began last year but was intensified again in February 2026.
