580 DPR Members Urged by Vice President to Relocate to IKN as Political Capital
Vice President of Indonesia Gibran Rakabuming Raka has appreciated input from DPR members regarding establishing offices in the Nusantara Capital (IKN) and invited elements from the executive, judicial, and legislative branches to join in operating from there.
“Thank you for the input from the Honourable Member of Parliament Mr Dedy Sitorus. We will all establish offices in IKN together,” said Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka in an official written statement received in Jakarta on Thursday (9/4).
“Because IKN has been designated as the political capital in 2028. Therefore, state administration from the executive, judicial, and legislative sides must be fulfilled,” the Vice President added.
Previously, in a meeting with the Head of the IKN Authority (OIKN) Basuki Hadimuljono on Monday (30/3), member of Commission II of the DPR RI Deddy Sitorus raised the idea of Vice President Gibran establishing an office in IKN.
Deddy made the statement while emphasising the importance of utilising the buildings already constructed in IKN. He urged OIKN Head Basuki to discuss this with President Prabowo Subianto.
“I’ve been asking for this for a long time. The Vice President, Minister of Forestry, Minister of Villages, Minister of Transmigration—move there. That’s public money,” he said.
In response, OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono stated that Vice President Gibran could establish an office in IKN starting this year as the buildings and supporting facilities have been completed.
According to Basuki, preparations have also been made by several Vice President’s staff who are already there. Basuki hopes the plan for the Vice President to office in IKN can be realised soon.
“If it’s me, my house is there now. So I hope it happens, that he will truly office there. That’s my hope,” said Basuki.
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka conducted a working visit to IKN in East Kalimantan to inspect educational facilities and markets, with the public enthusiastically taking photos with Gibran in IKN.
The year 2028 is a political year ahead of elections. It will add complexity and make the realisation of relocating the centre of government much more difficult.
IKN can function as the political capital if the infrastructure and all supporting facilities for the three state institutions—executive, legislative, and judicial—have been completed.
